The Shaken City – 3rd tremor in a row – Karachi’s Earthquake Saga Unfolds

-

Karachi has encountered its third minor earthquake within a short timeframe.
On May 2, a 2.3 magnitude tremor rattled sections of the city, including Gadap Town, Kathore, and nearby areas in the Malir district.

The epicenter of this quake was located 38 kilometers northeast of Malir, at a depth of 84 kilometers, according to the NSMC.

Similarly, on April 24, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake shook Karachi’s Malir district. Witnesses recounted frightened residents reciting prayers as they hurried outdoors, although no immediate reports of damage or casualties were received.

The NSMC reported the depth of this earthquake at 22 kilometers, with its epicenter situated 15 kilometers northeast of Karachi, affecting areas such as Defence and Clifton.

The World Bank highlights the escalating seismic risks in Pakistan since the 2005 earthquake, estimating that a recurrence today could incur nearly double the damages, reaching $2.8 billion in residential property alone.
