Pope Francis’ Health Worsens Amid Severe Infection

-

As Pope Francis battles a severe respiratory infection at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, fears are mounting over his fragile condition. The 88-year-old Pontiff has reportedly confided in close aides that he “might not make it this time,” raising concerns about the future of his papacy.

The Pontiff, admitted on February 14, is battling double pneumonia and remains under extensive medical care, according to Politico. While the Vatican insists his condition is stable, sources indicate he is experiencing significant discomfort and increasing reliance on medical intervention.

Health Concerns and Medical History

This latest health scare follows a series of medical issues in recent years, including an abdominal hernia surgery in 2023 and chronic sciatica pain. His respiratory condition has been further complicated by a long-standing history of lung issues; as a young man, he had part of one lung removed due to pleurisy.

Doctors at Gemelli hospital, where a special suite is reserved for papal treatment, have placed him on a “very targeted therapy” after identifying a polymicrobial infection. Though serious, experts believe the infection remains localized and has not spread extensively.

Vatican Updates and the Pope’s Activities

A Vatican official, speaking anonymously, confirmed on Wednesday that Pope Francis is not on a ventilator and is breathing on his own. He has managed to sit up in an armchair and resume limited clerical work.

Despite his frail condition, sources suggest the Pope has been “tying up loose ends,” making crucial appointments that could shape the Church’s future. Notably, before his hospitalization, he extended the tenure of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as the dean of the College of Cardinals—a decision that may influence the selection of his successor in a potential conclave.

Elected in 2013, Francis has been a reformist leader, pushing for a more inclusive Church and addressing clerical abuse scandals. His tenure has been met with both praise and criticism, especially for his progressive stance on social issues.

Global Support and Vatican Response

The Vatican has suspended all public engagements until at least Sunday, with no further official events on the Holy See’s calendar. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, has returned from a diplomatic visit to Burkina Faso, while other senior officials continue their assignments.

Pilgrims from around the world have gathered outside St. Peter’s Basilica, offering prayers for the Pope’s recovery. Outside Gemelli hospital, well-wishers have placed flowers and messages under a statue of Pope John Paul II.

“We will pray for him so that he can recover as soon as possible,” said Gianfranco Rizzo, a visitor from Bari, Italy.
