Modi’s Cabinet Without 200 Millions Muslim Representation Raises Concerns

Published on

People are worried because there are no Muslims in Modi’s new government, which could show how minorities are treated in India.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi started his third term, people noticed that there were no Muslims in his new government. Experts think this shows Modi wants to continue his policies and maybe try to be nicer to minorities.

On June 10, 2024, the Indian government released a photo of Modi’s first cabinet meeting in New Delhi. Modi kept important ministers like Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Rajnath Singh in their jobs. Jaishankar said Modi’s new term will focus on problems with China and terrorism from Pakistan.

India and China have been arguing about their borders for a long time, and there’s been a big fight since 2020. India has also fought with Pakistan three times, twice over Kashmir.

Experts think Jaishankar’s job means India will keep being tough with Pakistan and China, and will also try to make friends with other countries.

Even though Modi won again, his party didn’t get as many seats in parliament this time. They had to team up with other parties to have enough seats to make a government.

Most of the important jobs still went to Modi’s party, with one going to a different party. A professor from Kakatiya University thinks this shows Modi still wants to make sure his party stays in charge and that Muslims might still not get much attention.

But since the other parties have more seats in parliament, Modi might have to listen to them more. Another professor thinks that because one of the parties he’s working with has Muslim supporters, Modi might not be as hard on minorities as before.

“We’ll have to wait and see what happens,” he said
