A militant group in Mali recently received over $50 million (approx. 14 billion PKR) for the release of a UAE royal family member, marking the largest ransom in the region’s history.
The group, linked to Al-Qaeda, had also kidnapped the prince’s Pakistani and Iranian business partners.
The ransom negotiations included proof of life and an initial $700,000 payment before the full $50 million was paid. By late October 2025, all three hostages were safely released.
According to Malian security sources, the deal also led to the release of around 30 militants and some Malian soldiers. The ransom will significantly strengthen the group, which is already pressuring Mali’s military government through fuel restrictions and other tactics, affecting daily life in the capital Bamako.
Despite ongoing security measures, militant groups continue attacks and maintain control in several areas, highlighting the persistent threat to foreign nationals in West Africa.
