In a peculiar twist of currency fraud, Ahmedabad police uncovered counterfeit notes featuring Bollywood actor Anupam Kher’s image instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s.
During a raid in Surat on September 22, 2024, authorities seized the fake currency totaling $193,000, sparking a wave of humor and disbelief on social media.
The scam came to light when police discovered a facility in Surat manufacturing the counterfeit notes. Four suspects were arrested in connection with the case.
Two individuals had approached local gold dealer Mehul Thakkar in Navrangpura to buy gold, with the exchange planned for September 24 on CG Road.
They attempted to deceive him into exchanging 2,100 grams of gold for the fake cash.
The culprits handed over 26 bundles of cash sealed with counterfeit State Bank of India tape.
However, Thakkar’s employee quickly identified the notes as fake, but by then, the culprits had already escaped.
In addition to featuring Kher’s image, the fake notes read “Resole Bank of India” instead of “Reserve Bank of India.” Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Rajdeep Nukum revealed the scam was inspired by the hit web series Farzi, featuring Shahid Kapoor, which revolves around printing fake currency.
Anupam Kher took to Instagram to address the incident, humorously sharing a video about his face being used on the counterfeit notes.
At the same time, Kher is gearing up for the release of his new film Emergency, directed by Kangana Ranaut, which is currently facing certification delays.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has scheduled a hearing for September 30, 2024, following requests for modifications from the filmmakers.
