Dr. Singh is considered as key architect of India’s economic reforms
Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. He had been admitted to AIIMS in Delhi earlier in the day after his health deteriorated.
Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha in April 2024, ending a distinguished 33-year parliamentary career. He had joined the Rajya Sabha in 1991, shortly after being appointed Union Finance Minister in the government of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.
Born on September 26, 1932, in a village in undivided Punjab, Dr. Singh played a key role in India’s economic transformation. He served as the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972 and as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. His leadership as Finance Minister in the early 1990s was critical in initiating economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy.
Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics and economics.
