Shahid Afridi’s Praise for Rahul Gandhi Sparks Political Storm in India

-

🔥 Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has sparked a political storm in India with his remarks during a Pakistani TV panel on the Asia Cup 2025 clash between India and Pakistan.

Afridi praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his “positive mindset” and criticized the BJP for exploiting religious divisions to retain power. He said, “Rahul Gandhi believes in dialogue and unity; the BJP’s approach is divisive.”

Afridi also compared India’s policies toward Pakistan to Israel’s actions in Gaza, adding, “Isn’t one Israel enough?”

The BJP reacted strongly, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala accusing Gandhi of siding with those who “hate India.” Union Minister Kiren Rijiju added that Afridi and Pakistan might even consider Gandhi their leader. Meanwhile, the Congress party highlighted Afridi’s praise, stressing Gandhi’s focus on dialogue and peace.

Tensions were further fueled after the Asia Cup match, where Indian players reportedly refused to shake hands with Pakistani counterparts. Afridi defended the players, suggesting they were following instructions, and called the incident a “despicable mindset.”

This controversy highlights the intertwining of sports, politics, and diplomacy in South Asia, reflecting ongoing India-Pakistan tensions on and off the field.
