10kg Gold Seized-Bangladesh’s Biggest Crackdown on Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina

-

In a major development, Bangladesh’s interim government has confiscated 10 kilograms of gold worth 130,000 USD from the frozen bank lockers of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid.

According to global media reports, authorities have intensified investigations into Hasina over allegations of corruption, misuse of power, and crimes against humanity.

After Sheikh Hasina fled to India, the military-backed interim setup began a full audit of her properties, bank accounts, and financial assets. On 10 September, the National Board of Revenue’s intelligence wing froze her Pubali Bank locker (No. 128), along with her joint and deposit accounts.

A week later, on 17 September, two more lockers at Agrani Bank’s main branch were seized as legal action escalated.

Now, the government has officially confiscated 10kg of gold from these lockers, claiming it included foreign gifts she received as prime minister—gifts that were never deposited in the state treasury.

Local media reports say the interim government has ramped up its drive to recover illegal assets linked to the former PM, and this gold recovery is part of that crackdown.

Sheikh Hasina’s long rule came to an end in 2024 after a massive student-led uprising. Her government’s attempt to crush the protests with force resulted in hundreds of casualties, further fueling public anger.
