WhatsApp’s Context Cards to Protect Unwanted Group Invites

-

Meta-owned messaging app, WhatsApp, is launching a new feature called ‘context cards’ to help users navigate group chats safely. This feature, announced on Tuesday, is being rolled out to users to provide crucial information about group invitations.

When added to a group by someone you don’t know, a context card will display details such as who added you, when the group was created, and who created it. This allows you to decide whether to stay in the group or leave, as well as access additional safety tools.

“This includes who added you, how recently the group was created, and who created it,” WhatsApp explained. “This update ramps up safety, building on features like silencing unknown callers, chat lock, in-app privacy check-up, and controlling who can add you to groups.”

The context card is especially useful when meeting new people or joining new groups, helping you determine if the group is one you want to be a part of. It also provides similar information in 1:1 messaging, giving you more context if you’re contacted by someone you don’t know.

By introducing context cards, WhatsApp enhances its existing security features, including options to control who can add you to groups, silence unknown callers, and lock private chats. This proactive measure aims to protect users from online scams and unwanted interactions within group messaging, further safeguarding WhatsApp’s global user
