In a bold move to stay ahead of the curve, Meta has announced that WhatsApp will stop supporting a range of smartphones starting January 1, 2025. If you’re still holding on to an older device, this is your warning: it’s time to upgrade, or you’ll miss out on future updates!
This decision comes as WhatsApp adapts to the latest technological advancements, ensuring it delivers the best service to users around the world, including in Pakistan. Devices running outdated operating systems, no longer eligible for updates, will no longer be able to use the app.
As a result, these older Android phones will not be able to install future WhatsApp updates, meaning users won’t be able to continue using the app.

WABetaInfo has reported that WhatsApp will discontinue support for iOS versions prior to 15.1 starting May 5, 2025. Currently, the app is compatible with devices running iOS 12 and later. After this update, users will need at least iOS 15.1 to continue using WhatsApp. Those with iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7, will no longer have access to the app.
Reasons for Terminating Support
This decision is in line with WhatsApp’s strategy to take advantage of updated APIs and technologies available in newer iOS versions. These advancements allow the app to improve performance, introduce new features, and offer a smoother user experience.
The limitations of older iOS versions, which cannot support these updates, have prompted WhatsApp to focus on devices with more recent operating systems.
Additionally, WhatsApp’s analysis reveals that only a small percentage of users rely on older iOS versions, enabling the platform to allocate resources more effectively and prioritize improvements for the majority of its user base.
