Goodbye Skype-Microsoft Announces to Discontinue Iconic Platform After 21 Years

-

Remember the days of “Skype me”? Those days are coming to an end. Microsoft has announced it will discontinue Skype on May 5, 2025, officially retiring the legendary platform as it shifts focus to Microsoft Teams.

To ensure a seamless transition, users can migrate their chats, contacts, and data to Teams. This move aligns with Microsoft’s strategy to unify its communication tools under a modern, integrated platform.

Since its launch in 2003 and Microsoft’s acquisition in 2011, Skype revolutionized online communication. However, with Teams gaining dominance—especially post-pandemic—Skype’s relevance faded, leading to its retirement.

Users must migrate to Teams or export their Skype data before the shutdown. Paid services will also phase out, with existing credits valid until their next renewal.

With this decision, Microsoft officially ends an era, bidding farewell to one of the most influential communication platforms of the digital age.
