Over 20 Indian News Outlets Sue OpenAI Over Copyright Concerns

-

In a significant legal move, more than 20 digital news organizations in India have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI giant of using copyrighted material without consent.

The 135-page lawsuit alleges that OpenAI’s actions pose a clear threat to the valuable copyrights of digital news publishers. Among the plaintiffs are prominent Indian digital news groups linked to billionaires Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, as well as Indian Express and Hindustan Times.

OpenAI has been under scrutiny globally for similar accusations, with media outlets, authors, and musicians accusing the company of using their copyrighted work without permission. While OpenAI maintains that it operates outside India and the case doesn’t fall under Indian court jurisdiction, the lawsuit has sparked wider debates on the intersection of AI and intellectual property rights.
