PTA Plans to Block Unregistered VPNs Amid Internet Restrictions

-

Pakistan’s Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is considering blocking unregistered VPNs. This decision was discussed during a Senate committee meeting chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan.

The PTA Chairman revealed that complaints about social media apps are prevalent, with significant issues reported for TikTok, Meta, and X (formerly Twitter).

The PTA is working to regulate internet use, similar to Dubai and China, and has already registered 20,500 VPNs. A campaign is ongoing to encourage more registrations, with a warning that unregistered VPNs may soon be blocked.

In related news, journalist Hamid Mir has challenged the installation of firewalls and internet shutdowns in court, arguing these measures are negatively impacting internet speed and the digital economy.
