If you’re using an older iPhone or a feature phone, it’s time to check your device. Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will cease support for a number of older models, including both iPhones and KaiOS-powered feature phones. Keep reading to find out if your device is affected and what you need to do to stay connected.
WhatsApp will require iOS 15.1 or later for continued use, meaning older iPhone models unable to update beyond iOS 12.5.7 will no longer be supported. The affected iPhone models include:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
These devices, which were released more than a decade ago, still have some active users, but this change will impact those relying on them for WhatsApp.
In addition, WhatsApp will stop supporting several feature phones running older versions of KaiOS by February 2025. These devices, popular in regions with high demand for affordable smartphones, will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp. Affected KaiOS models include:
JioPhone
JioPhone 2
Nokia 800 Tough
Nokia 2720 Flip
Nokia 2760 Flip
Nokia 2780 Flip
Nokia 6300 4G
Nokia 8000 4G
Nokia 8110 4G
The end of compatibility with KaiOS versions earlier than 3.0 means these phones will no longer run WhatsApp.
System Requirements
To continue using WhatsApp after the May 5 deadline, your device must meet the following minimum system requirements:
Android: Version 5.0 (Lollipop) or later
iOS: Version 15.1 or later
Devices running older operating systems will no longer receive updates and may become vulnerable to security risks.
Why the Change?
WhatsApp regularly phases out support for outdated operating systems to improve security, performance, and features. By focusing on more current systems, the platform aims to offer a smoother, safer user experience while staying up to date with technological advancements.
What Should Affected Users Do?
Users with affected devices have until May 5, 2025, to upgrade to a compatible smartphone. WhatsApp encourages upgrading in time to avoid any service disruption.
