On the first day of the Test, the Indian team was dismissed for 180 runs. In reply, when the Australian innings began, in the 18th over, not once but twice, the ground’s floodlights suddenly went out, the field went dark, and play was halted.
During this, the crowd turned on their mobile phone lights.
As soon as the stadium lights went out, commentator Harsha Bhogle jokingly said, “It seems someone has fallen asleep,” while Australian commentator David Warner remarked, “It looks like someone hasn’t paid their electricity bill here.”
However, after about three minutes, the lights came back on, and play resumed.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia issued a statement saying that the ground management is trying to determine the cause of the lights going out and that they would provide an update as soon as any information becomes available.
