Joyland Blocked !Lahore Police Raid ‘Screening Event,’Arrest Organizers

-

The controversy around Pakistan’s most talked-about film Joyland just refuses to die down.

On Sunday night, Lahore police stormed into what they called an “immoral event” and photo shoot, arresting the main suspect along with several others. The crackdown came after videos of the gathering went viral online, sparking outrage.

Police officials confirmed an FIR has been registered, while more raids are underway. DIG Operations Lahore warned that “obscenity in the name of parties or photo shoots” will not be tolerated, adding that all those involved would be dragged before the law.

As part of the action, authorities also pulled the plug on a much-anticipated screening of Joyland in the city. The film, already banned by the Punjab government two years ago despite being Pakistan’s official Oscar entry, was set to be shown at a private venue with director Saim Sadiq in attendance for a Q&A session.

The move sparked mixed reactions online, with fashion designer Maria B hailing it as a victory. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she declared:
“Alhamdulillah, this is a win for all parents who love Islam and want to protect their kids. This is not the end of our fight against the satanists and Zionists.”

She urged parents and institutions to “join forces” against what she called a dangerous agenda.

🎬 Joyland, Pakistan’s first Cannes-winning film, has been at the center of heated debates since its release. And once again, the film’s screening plans have been shut down — leaving fans disappointed and critics divided.
