The upcoming historical drama Chhaava has sparked controversy over a dance scene featuring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, which has now been removed following a meeting between director Laxman Utekar and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray.
The scene, which depicted the Lezim dance, a traditional Maharashtrian folk dance, drew objections from political figures and historical experts, particularly due to its portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj.
After his meeting with Thackeray, Utekar explained that he valued the leader’s insights and agreed to remove the scene. “Raj Thackeray is an avid reader and a studious person, so I found his guidance very helpful,” Utekar said.
He further emphasized that Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy is much greater than the dance scene, adding, “We have decided to remove those scenes.”
The controversial moment was part of Utekar’s vision of portraying a young Sambhaji Maharaj, influenced by Shivaji Sawant’s historical fiction Chhava.
Utekar clarified that the scene was meant to show the king, as a 20-year-old, participating in cultural activities like the Holi festival. To ensure historical accuracy, Utekar announced a special premiere for historians and experts on January 29.
Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant had also raised concerns about the film on social media, suggesting that the film be reviewed by experts to guarantee its authenticity before release.
Chhaava, a historical drama about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, stars Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, with Rashmika Mandanna and other notable actors. The film, produced by Maddock Films, is set for release on February 14, 2025.
