Netflix has announced six new Korean romance titles that will be released throughout the remainder of 2023. The titles were revealed at an in-person event in Seoul called “K-romance obsession.”
The event was attended by K-drama influencers from the Asia Pacific region. It was decorated with vibrant red and pink decorations, and attendees were treated to snack foods featured in popular K-dramas.
Netflix reported that global viewership of its K-romance titles has tripled between 2018 and 2022. Over 90% of views in 2022 came from outside South Korea. Don Kang, VP of content (Korea), said that K-romance stories touch on universal themes of love, heartbreak, and tenderness, while also providing glimpses into Korean culture.
Yang Wooyeon, director of content (Korea), said that dubbing has played a crucial role in the genre’s global expansion. He noted that hearing the dialogues in viewers’ own languages enhances the resonance of K-romance with audiences worldwide.
The films “See You in my 19th Life” and “King the Land” are scheduled to premiere on June 17. The other four titles are “Behind Your Touch,” “Destined With You,” “A Time Called You,” and “Doona!”
- See You in My 19th Life: This drama tells the story of a woman who has been reincarnated 18 times and is finally ready to find love.
- King the Land: This historical drama tells the story of a king who falls in love with a commoner.
- Behind Your Touch: This fantasy drama tells the story of a woman who can see people’s auras and a man who is trying to hide his true self.
- Destined With You: This romantic comedy tells the story of two people who are fated to be together, even though they don’t believe in fate.
- A Time Called You: This time-travel drama tells the story of two people who meet in different time periods and fall in love.
- Doona!: This sci-fi drama tells the story of a woman who can travel through time and space.
