KARACHI: The Chief Minister of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, was briefed today on the expected heavy rainfall due to a new weather system entering the province.
The session, held in Karachi, was attended by key officials, including Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz, who informed the CM that the weather system is expected to bring heavy rains to Karachi from August 27 to 31.
Another monsoon system is anticipated in the first week of September, according to the meteorologist. Karachi could receive between 150 to 200 millimeters of rain, while Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, and Nawab Shah are expected to see 250 to 300mm of rainfall.
The districts of Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, and Umarkot could experience up to 500mm of rain. Other districts in Sindh may receive 70 to 100 mm of rainfall.
Salman Shah, the Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), warned that August 28 could bring extremely heavy rainfall, potentially leading to flooding in Dadu, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, and Jamshoro.
CM Shah has instructed divisional commissioners to take all necessary precautions and directed local governments to stay vigilant, monitor nullahs and drains, and ensure that machinery for water drainage is in place.
Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani stated that machinery has already been provided to all towns for drain and nullah cleaning.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab added that the city’s drainage systems have been improved, and Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro provided an update on the status of irrigation canals.
