PMD Warns of Cyclone Formation Near Sindh Coast by Evening

-

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that a potential cyclone, which developed over the Rann of Kutch region in India, is currently positioned approximately 200 kilometers east-southeast of Karachi.

The system is expected to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm (CS) by this afternoon or evening.

The PMD reported that the deep depression (a very strong low-pressure area) has gradually moved west-southwestward over the past 12 hours and is now located at Latitude 23.5 N and Longitude 68.4 E.

The system is anticipated to continue moving in the same direction toward the northeast Arabian Sea along the Sindh coast, where it will likely strengthen further.

As a result of this developing cyclone, widespread rain and thunderstorms are forecasted across several regions, including Karachi division, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, T.M. Khan, T.A. Yar, Matiari, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Dadu, and Shaheed Benazirabad districts until August 31.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in Hub, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, and Gwadar districts from August 30 to September 1, with occasional breaks.

The PMD has warned that heavy rains could lead to waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas along the Sindh-Makran coast. The sea is also predicted to remain very rough, with winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h.

Fishermen in Sindh have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until August 31, while those in Balochistan should stay ashore until September 1.

The PMD’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as needed.
