Sultana Bibi Achieves Landmark Becomes 3rd Pakistani Women to Summit K2

-

Pakistani mountaineer Sultana Bibi has successfully scaled K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, joining the ranks of the few Pakistani women to achieve this remarkable feat.

She completed her ascent early Monday, becoming the third Pakistani woman to reach the summit.

Before Sultana, Samina Baig and Niala Kiani reached the 8,611-meter peak in July 2022, with Baig being the first Pakistani woman to do so and Kiani following shortly after.

Sultana began her journey from Skardu in June with two climbing teams aiming to scale the perilous mountain on the Pakistan-China border. Her team comprised six female climbers from Pakistan, while the other was a joint expedition of Pakistani and Italian climbers.

The expedition was led by renowned Pakistani mountaineer Sirbaz Ali.

K2, often called the “savage mountain” due to its treacherous conditions, has a high fatality rate, with around 23 deaths per 100 climbers, as reported by Ultimate Kilimanjaro. The mountain’s unpredictable weather, frequent avalanches, rockfalls, and challenging routes make it extremely dangerous.
