PTI leaders Shireen Mazari and Maleeka Bokhari rearrested despite court orders

-

Two PTI leaders were rearrested on Wednesday, hours after they were released on bail by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Shireen Mazari, a former federal minister, was arrested by women personnel of the Punjab Police under Section 4 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

Maleeka Bokhari, a PTI lawmaker, was arrested from her residence in Islamabad.

The arrests have been condemned by the PTI and its supporters, who have accused the government of targeting the party’s leadership.

The IHC summoned the Punjab government to explain the arrests on Thursday.

Here is a brief background on the two leaders:

  • Shireen Mazari is a former federal minister and a senior PTI leader. She was arrested on May 7 on charges of desecrating a sacred site. She was released on bail on May 17, but was rearrested hours later.
  • Maleeka Bokhari is a PTI lawmaker and a former spokesperson for the party. She was arrested on May 16 on charges of inciting violence. She was released on bail on May 17 but was rearrested hours later.

The arrests of Mazari and Bokhari are the latest in a series of crackdowns on PTI leaders and supporters by the government.

In recent weeks, the government has arrested dozens of PTI leaders and workers and has raided the party’s offices and residences.

The PTI has accused the government of using the police and other state agencies to target the party and its supporters.

The government has denied the allegations, saying that it is only taking action against those who have broken the law.

The arrests of Mazari and Bokhari have further heightened tensions between the PTI and the government.

It remains to be seen how the government will respond to the IHC’s summons on Thursday.
