Sindh Minister Expresses Concerns Over Heat-Related Deaths Mount Amid Power Failure
Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar expressed deep sorrow and regret over the recent sudden deaths of citizens in Karachi due to extreme heat, stating that the government is considering pressing murder charges against K-Electric, the city’s power distribution company.
The discovery of bodies in Karachi has continued for three consecutive days amidst severe heat, with 11 bodies, including that of a woman, found in various parts of the city on Tuesday. Only three of the deceased have been identified so far.
In the past three days, a total of 36 bodies have been discovered in Karachi. Volunteers from Chhipa and Edhi organizations have been transporting the bodies to government hospitals and then to mortuaries. On Sunday, 10 bodies were found, followed by 15 on Monday, and 11 on Tuesday.
A spokesperson mentioned that the minister has taken notice of these incidents and stated on Tuesday, “Investigations are underway to determine the exact causes of these deaths.”
He further stated, “If the inquiry reveals that power outages are the primary cause, K-Electric will be held accountable. Legal action, including murder charges, may be pursued against K-Electric’s administrators and officials.”
Hospitals in Karachi, including Jinnah and Civil hospitals, continue to receive numerous patients affected by the extreme heat, with many receiving initial medical aid and being discharged.
