Fashion designer Khadijah Shah has decided to renounce her US citizenship to accept a reserved seat in Pakistan’s National Assembly offered by PTI founder Imran Khan.
Shah, who has been detained in connection with May 9 cases, made this announcement on Instagram, stating that giving up her US citizenship was challenging but necessary for serving her homeland, Pakistan.
According to Pakistan’s constitution, dual nationals are prohibited from becoming members of parliament.
Shah emphasized her commitment to Pakistan despite facing significant injustices over the past year and a half.
She expressed her honor at being chosen by Imran Khan and her hope to meet the expectations of her fellow citizens.
Until her dual nationality issue is resolved, Mehrunnisa Sajjad will represent her in the assembly.
Shah highlighted Mehrunnisa’s credentials, including her education from Oxford University, her role as Vice President of the Oxford Union, and her dedication to advocating for marginalized groups in Pakistan.
Shah praised Mehrunnisa’s passion for human rights, democracy, and progress in Pakistan.
She expressed pride in nominating such a distinguished young woman to represent PTI and pledged to work together for the betterment of their country.
Shah was released on bail in December 2023 after being detained for involvement in May 9 vandalism and riots. Although an anti-terrorism court withdrew bailable warrants against her in April 2024, new warrants were issued later for the same violence.
