Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, has warned the government that a “civil disobedience” movement will be launched on December 14 if his demands are not met.
The former prime minister, who remains incarcerated, outlined two major demands: the release of political prisoners facing trial and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the violent crackdown on PTI supporters during protests, including the May 9 incident and the November 26 late-night operation or else ready for Civil Disobedience Movement.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Imran Khan announced the formation of a five-member PTI committee to negotiate with the federal government.
The committee includes key leaders like Omar Ayub Khan, Ali Amin Gandapur, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Salman Akram Raja, and Asad Qaiser, who will push for the release of political prisoners and a thorough judicial inquiry into the events surrounding the protests.
“If these two demands are not accepted, we will launch a civil disobedience movement from December 14,” Imran Khan declared. He stressed that the government would be responsible for the consequences of the movement.
The PTI leader added that the government had failed to address the serious violations of human rights, and urged the Supreme Court to take notice and fulfill its constitutional role in investigating the matter.
The move to launch a civil disobedience campaign comes after PTI’s previous protest in Islamabad, which ended in a violent government crackdown. Despite government claims that no live ammunition was used, PTI maintains that 12 of its workers were killed and over 1,000 arrested during the protest. Imran Khan’s call for civil disobedience is his latest attempt to pressure the government into meeting PTI’s demands and to seek justice for the party’s supporters.
As tensions rise, Imran Khan has also announced a major gathering in Peshawar on December 13 to honor the “martyrs” of the PTI protests and rally support for the movement. The call for civil disobedience signals a new phase in PTI’s struggle for political reform and accountability.
