Gwadar and Baluchistan Regions Grapple with Devastating Effects of Heavy Rainfall, Disrupting Daily Life and Transportation”
Following 30 hours of continuous rainfall, flash floods engulfed extensive areas, prompting the local administration to deploy paramilitary forces for rescue and relief efforts. The Gwadar district administration declared a state of emergency in the affected regions submerged by the floods.
Authorities reported that over the past two days, Gwadar district experienced approximately 180 millimeters of rainfall, severely impacting daily life and displacing hundreds of individuals. Floodwaters breached homes, leading to the collapse of numerous settlements and businesses, with roads suffering significant damage.
The coastal highway sustained damage, preventing the restoration of traffic between Karachi and Gwadar.
Floodwater infiltrated homes, compelling families to seek refuge in safer locations. Hayatullah Baloch, a resident of Gwadar, lamented the loss of their belongings and the uninhabitable conditions of their houses due to the floods. The sewage system in the port city became clogged, leading to the overflow of sewage onto roads and streets. With inadequate drainage infrastructure, only a few pumps were operational for removing floodwater. The water supply system was severely disrupted, exacerbating the shortage of drinking water. Furthermore, the Gwadar-Peshkan road and numerous dykes in areas like Surbandan, Jewany, and Palery were washed away by the floods.
It’s reassuring to hear that various agencies, including the army, navy, Gwadar Development Authority, Gwadar Port Authority, and the municipal committee, are working together to assist the flood-affected people. Rescuing and providing shelter to around 280 individuals, including women and children, demonstrates a coordinated effort to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
The collaborative efforts of the army, navy, Gwadar Development Authority, Gwadar Port Authority, and municipal committee in aiding the flood-affected individuals exemplify effective disaster response and community support.
