FBR Targets 2.8 Million Households to Raise Rs1.6 Trillion in Revenue

-

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is preparing to integrate around 2.8 million households into the tax system, potentially generating an additional Rs1.6 trillion for Pakistan’s economy.

According to FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad, there are approximately 3.5 million households eligible to pay taxes, but many remain outside the tax net.

Recent efforts by the government have led to a 105% increase in tax filers, climbing from 1.8 million to 3.7 million within the current fiscal year (2024-25). The FBR plans to introduce 15 new restrictions on non-filers within the next few months, aiming to fully eliminate the non-filer category.

This initiative, along with the digitization of customs and taxation processes, is part of a broader reform agenda, including discussions with the World Bank on further digitalization and anti-smuggling efforts.
