Fact Check – AI Image Misleads Hamid Mir & Haqqani on Karachi Protest

-

In a recent incident, senior journalists and analysts mistakenly shared a manipulated image of a woman being assaulted during a protest outside Karachi Press Club.

Yesterday, police acted against the ‘Sindh Rawadari March’ at the Karachi Press Club, during which both men and women were subjected to brutal violence, and the officers also misbehaved with them.

A video went viral during this incident, showing female officers dragging a woman participating in the protest.

Following this video, human rights activists in Pakistan and other countries harshly criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party and the local police.

In Islamabad, senior journalist and analyst, as well as former ambassador Hussain Haqqani, also failed to recognize an AI-generated image and condemned the incident by posting a picture of the affected girl.

Hamid Mir stated that this defenseless daughter of the nation, who was thrown to the ground, was surrounded and dragged on the road.

The entire world witnessed this spectacle in Karachi, which will remain etched in the memory of Pakistanis forever.

Those who stage such spectacles are trying to mislead us regarding the benefits of the constitutional court; this court will become a weapon against those oppressors.

In response, a user addressed Hamid Mir, saying, “Mir Sahib, the image you posted is fake; the real image is this.”

Additionally, Hussain Haqqani, the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, also condemned the incident and posted the same image, stating that it not only serves as a source of embarrassment for the Sindh government and the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party but also reflects their impending downfall.

Later, he reposted the same image, clarifying,

“I was informed that this photo was created by AI, but I also have many other pictures and videos based on which my opinion remains the same as I stated earlier.”
