The UN Human Rights Working Group has criticized the decision to detain Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), calling it arbitrary and contrary to international law.
The legal opinion from the UN Working Group was issued in response to a petition filed by Zulfi Bukhari’s law firm at the United Nations, demanding the immediate release of Imran Khan.
According to a report by the UN Human Rights Working Group, the arrest of the PTI founder lacked legal justification and seemed to be aimed at disqualifying him.
The report urged the government to permit the working group to visit Pakistan and conduct an unbiased investigation into the conditions in the prison where the PTI founder is held.
The working group expressed concern that the PTI founder was denied the opportunity to defend himself and that the right to cross-examine lawyers was removed and granted to the government instead.
