Islamabad — On October 23, 2024, Pakistan commemorates the 2nd anniversary of the tragic death of prominent journalist and anchorperson Arshad Sharif.
Sharif, known for his fearless reporting and dedication to uncovering the truth, was killed in Kenya, under mysterious circumstances, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from the public and the international community.
His untimely killing in Kenya in 2022 not only shocked the nation but also raised significant concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists.
The fact-finding team established by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior recently submitted a 592-page report to the Supreme Court, indicating that Sharif was killed as part of a “premeditated plan.” The investigation highlights the crucial roles of his hosts, Khurram and Waqar, in Kenya, and calls for further inquiry into their involvement.
The report detailed events surrounding his murder, including his travel records and digital communications, raising questions about the motivations behind his killing.
During memorial services held across Pakistan, family, colleagues, and supporters paid tribute to Sharif’s contributions to journalism and his advocacy for the rights of the oppressed. Many shared memories and expressed how his work inspired them to pursue truth and justice.
Despite the passage of time, the quest for justice for Arshad Sharif continues, with various organizations and human rights groups emphasizing the need for improved safety measures for journalists and transparency in the investigations.
The fact-finding team, which included FIA Director Athar Waheed and Deputy Director General of the Intelligence Bureau, Umar Shahid Hamid, investigated the motives behind Sharif’s killing and met with Kenyan authorities.
The report revealed that four police officers from Kenya’s General Service Unit (GSU) were involved under pressure or financial assistance, and it criticized the Kenyan police for not cooperating with the investigation.
The findings also pointed to contradictions in the accounts of Khurram, who claimed Sharif was shot at the farmhouse gate yet displayed uncertainty about Sharif’s condition upon his arrival. Furthermore, the report highlighted that Sharif was shot in the back with no bullet marks on the seat, raising suspicions about the circumstances of his death. An autopsy indicated possible prior violence, further complicating the narrative.
In a notable revelation, the report mentioned that Waqar Ahmed, who facilitated Sharif’s visa, failed to provide satisfactory answers during the inquiry and handed Sharif’s phone to Kenya’s intelligence agency rather than the police.
As investigations continue, Sharif’s lawyer, Barrister Shoaib, noted that the ISPR (Inter-Services Public Relations) was like a second home to Sharif, who had strong connections within the military establishment. He emphasized the need for justice and accountability for Sharif’s death.
As the anniversary serves as a reminder of the risks faced by journalists, it reinforces the urgent call for protecting press freedom in Pakistan and the need for comprehensive action to ensure justice for Arshad Sharif.
