The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is shaping up to be a thrilling contest, but the real excitement is off the field. Pakistan and India are engaged in a game of nerves, with Pakistan’s principled stance putting the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) in a tough spot.
The BCCI had initially refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan, but now they might have to pay a heavy price. Pakistan has agreed to host the Champions Trophy in a hybrid model, with the condition that India will have to play its matches at a neutral venue. This model will also apply to future ICC events in India.¹
The ICC is expected to announce its decision on December 7. Senior journalist Saleem Khalid revealed that an informal meeting took place between Jay Shah and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, where matters were finalized.
Pakistan had initially demanded a hybrid model for all ICC events in India until 2031, which the BCCI opposed. However, Pakistan stood firm, and now a proposal has been made to host Pakistan-India matches in Dubai in 2027.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also demanded that the agreement between the Pakistan and India cricket boards regarding the ICC Champions Trophy be documented in the form of a Host Agreement. This agreement will state that Pakistan’s matches in future tournaments in India will also be held at neutral venues if India does not visit Pakistan.
