Ratan Tata, the esteemed industrialist and philanthropist, passed away on October 9 at the age of 86, leaving behind a remarkable legacy valued at approximately Rs 10,000 crore.
His will reflects his deep affection for family, loyal staff, and his beloved pets, including provisions for his German Shepherd, Tito.
Tata’s estate includes valuable assets such as a beach bungalow in Alibaug, a two-storey home in Mumbai, and fixed deposits exceeding Rs 350 crore. Notably, his stake in Tata Sons will be transferred to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), and his awards will be donated to the Tata Central Archives to preserve his legacy for future generations.
According to a report by The Times of India, Tata’s will ensures “unlimited care” for Tito, who was adopted six years ago after the passing of Tata’s previous pet. The care for Tito will be entrusted to Tata’s longtime cook, Rajan Shaw. Additionally, his butler Subbiah, who had been with Tata for over three decades, and executive assistant Shantanu Naidu, who received support for his companionship venture, Goodfellows, are also beneficiaries. Tata waived the loan Naidu had taken for his studies abroad.
Known for his kindness and generosity, Tata’s commitment to those around him extended beyond human connections. His dedication to animals was evident when he opened India’s first Small Animal Hospital in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, featuring state-of-the-art facilities for pets. His love for dogs was so profound that he once skipped an award ceremony with Prince Charles to care for a sick pet, illustrating the deep bond he shared with animals.
As Tata’s will is probated by the Bombay High Court, his legacy of compassion and support for both people and pets will undoubtedly live on, showcasing a life devoted to love and kindness.
