Kohli’s 300th ODI A Milestone That Defines His Legacy

-

Few cricketers have dominated the game like Virat Kohli. From being India’s most promising youngster to one of the greatest batsmen of all time, his journey has been a saga of brilliance, resilience, and unwavering passion. As he steps onto the field for his 300th ODI on Sunday, Kohli doesn’t just mark a statistical milestone—he cements his place among cricketing immortals.

India faces New Zealand in their final group match in Dubai, with both teams already through to the semi-finals of the 50-over tournament. Nicknamed “King Kohli” for his prolific run-scoring, he endured a rough patch that sparked speculation about his future, even whispers of retirement alongside Rohit Sharma, who has already exited T20 internationals.

However, Kohli silenced critics in the most emphatic way—with an unbeaten 100 against Pakistan, a knock that not only powered India to victory but also reaffirmed his greatness. The century, his first in ODIs since November 2023, was a masterclass in patience, skill, and dominance.

Teammate KL Rahul hailed Kohli’s contribution, emphasizing that he still has much to offer. “Three hundred ODIs is a massive achievement. Words fall short in describing how great a player he’s been and what he has done for Indian cricket. Really happy to see him get that century—he’s been batting beautifully,” Rahul said.

Kohli also crossed 14,000 ODI runs during his innings against Pakistan, becoming only the third player in history to do so, alongside legends Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. His 51st ODI century, achieved in 299 matches, brings his international tally to an astonishing 82 centuries.

As the 22nd player and seventh Indian to reach the 300-match milestone, Kohli drew praise from New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell, who has played alongside him in the IPL. “Three hundred games in one format is incredible. It speaks volumes about his dedication and longevity,” Bracewell remarked.

Kohli’s career has been a tale of triumphs and challenges. He played a key role in India’s 2011 World Cup victory under MS Dhoni and later led the team to the top of the Test rankings. Yet, despite his success, the lack of an ICC trophy as captain and a lean patch led to intense scrutiny, ultimately resulting in him stepping down from leadership.

But through it all—form slumps, mental health battles, and public criticism—Kohli’s fire never faded. He remains the heartbeat of Indian cricket, adored by millions. Whether it’s fans storming the field to touch his feet or the opposition acknowledging uh greatness, Kohli’s legacy is already written in golden letters. As he walks out for his 300th ODI, it’s not just another match—it’s a celebration of an icon who refuses to fade away.
