Former head coach criticizes selectors for dropping Irfan Khan Niazi and Sufiyan Muqeem, calls it a major mistake in Champions Trophy 2025.
Pakistan’s squad selection for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has come under fire, with former head coach and Australian cricket legend Jason Gillespie calling it a blunder. He expressed shock over the exclusion of two key players, terming it a major mistake that could cost Pakistan dearly.

In a recent interview, Gillespie stated that the inclusion of young talents Irfan Khan Niazi and Sufiyan Muqeem could have significantly benefited Pakistan in the tournament. He praised Irfan Niazi’s batting and fielding abilities, calling his omission an unbelievable decision.
“Irfan Khan Niazi is one of Pakistan’s most dangerous and explosive hitters, as well as one of the best fielders. Leaving him out of the Champions Trophy squad is beyond belief,” he said.
Gillespie also commended young spinner Sufiyan Muqeem, calling him a valuable asset to Pakistan cricket.
“Sufiyan Muqeem is a talented cricketer, and if given proper opportunities, he can serve Pakistan cricket for a long time,” he remarked.
He further added that despite his brief international career, Sufiyan Muqeem has already proven his skills and temperament. He criticized the selectors and team management for ignoring him and choosing to enter the tournament with just one specialist spinner.
Pakistan’s campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 has been a disaster, with the defending champions crashing out in the group stage. Defeats against New Zealand and India sealed their fate, leaving their final match against Bangladesh on February 27 in Rawalpindi as a mere formality. With mounting criticism over team selection, Pakistan’s management now faces tough questions about their decisions.
