President-Elect Donald Trump to Impose Heavy Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China
In a post on his social media platform “Truth,” US President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order imposing significant tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China as soon as he is sworn into office. He revealed that he will levy a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% on existing tariffs on goods from China.
Trump further stated that the tariffs on Mexico and Canada will remain in place until both countries take action to stop drug smuggling and illegal immigration into the United States. He emphasized that both nations have the authority and means to resolve this issue easily and urged them to act or face the consequences.
In a separate post, Trump made it clear that the extra 10% tax on China will stay in effect until the country fulfills its promise to execute drug traffickers. The US holds China responsible for the smuggling of fentanyl, a drug more potent than heroin, into the country.
The current US administration under President Joe Biden has also pressured China to take further measures to curb fentanyl production, which has been linked to nearly 75,000 deaths in the United States last year.
In response, a Chinese spokesperson denied claims that China was fully aware of or intentionally allowed fentanyl trafficking to the US, calling these assertions completely false. The spokesperson also noted that no trade or tariff war could be won and emphasized the importance of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries to achieve common goals.
