Pakistan’s EV Industry-A Greener Future on Wheels

-

Electric vehicle (EV) motorbikes are gaining popularity in Pakistan, with around 40 local brands selling 3,000 units per month. The government aims to increase EV bike sales to 30%, reaching 500,000 units annually by 2028.

As the industry grows, manufacturers are calling for government support to make EVs more affordable and accessible. They want policies that encourage local production, reduce taxes, and accelerate the industry’s growth.

EV and NEV assemblers are asking the Engineering Development Board (EDB) to include key demands in the upcoming New Energy Vehicle (NEV) policy. These include tax exemptions, free registration for customers, financing options, and support for local manufacturing to reduce prices and boost industry growth.

Currently, Pakistani consumers pay Rs240,000 for gasoline-powered 125cc bikes and Rs550,000 for 150cc models, which lack modern features. If proper incentives are introduced, EV bikes could become a more attractive option for customers looking for affordable and futuristic vehicles.

Industry leaders plan to invest in research, local production, and charging infrastructure. They suggest reducing taxes on EV parts and eliminating the 18% GST on imports to lower prices and promote consumer adoption. Senior analyst Muhammad Sabir Shaikh emphasized the need for rapid localization, particularly in manufacturing bike frames and motors.

ETURBO CEO Sheikh Osama Nadeem highlighted the importance of government support, stating that strong sales and a sustainable policy could bring the NEV industry to Pakistan. He cited China’s successful NEV industry as a model.

NEV bikes offer innovative features like reverse control, Bluetooth speakers, USB chargers, and emergency switches for extended travel. Spare parts and trained technicians are readily available at assembly units and showrooms.

Sources report that the EDB has shortlisted 10 companies to supply 40,000 bikes, which will be available at subsidized rates through an online portal. The WHO is also funding NEV adoption in developing countries to phase out gasoline vehicles and address climate change.
