“Lapata Ladies,” directed by Kiran Rao, has garnered significant acclaim after receiving an Oscar nomination, showcasing its compelling narrative.
Kiran Rao, former wife of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, directed the film, which has now been nominated for an Academy Award. Aamir Khan served as the producer for this project.
According to the Times of India, the Film Federation of India announced that “Lapata Ladies” has been nominated in the International Film category for the Oscars 2025.
The film has been officially selected as India’s entry for the prestigious awards. It premiered on September 8, 2023, at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in cinemas on March 1, 2024.
Selected from a competitive lineup of 12 Hindi films, 6 Tamil films, and 4 Malayalam films, “Lapata Ladies” features performances by Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan.
The storyline revolves around a man whose bride goes missing during a train journey. Due to the bridal veil, he fails to recognize his own wife and mistakenly brings another bride home.
Reports indicate that “Lapata Ladies” was produced on a budget of 40 to 50 million rupees and has achieved worldwide earnings of 270 million rupees.
