UN deploys unique 3D printer to build homes from mud and waste in Colombia

-

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is utilizing cutting-edge 3D printing technology to address poverty and inequality in Colombia.

They have introduced a WASP Crane 3D printer to create buildings using locally sourced materials.

The Crane WASP 3D printer, which can print with materials such as clay and cement over areas exceeding 100 square meters, has been previously employed in projects like a Dior pop-up store in Dubai and a sensory garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The WASP Crane is designed to work with local resources, including soil and agricultural waste, supporting sustainability and housing equality goals. Its mobility, adaptability, and low energy consumption make it well-suited for remote and challenging locations.

This project mirrors other 3D printing initiatives, such as New South Wales’ efforts to build social housing. It will be interesting to see how WASP’s technology is applied in Colombia for constructing homes, public facilities, or shelters.
