Government blocks passport of 2,000 Pakistani beggars

-

The federal government announced on Sunday its intention to invalidate the passports of more than 2,000 individuals found participating in begging activities overseas.

Authorities have requested detailed information from the Ministry of External Affairs about these individuals, compiling lists from Pakistani missions worldwide.

Official sources stated that passports of those found begging abroad will be invalidated for a period of seven years.

Government officials underscored that begging in foreign countries not only tarnishes Pakistan’s image but also compromises the dignity of its citizens.

“The practice of begging by Pakistanis abroad brings shame to the nation,” emphasized a Ministry of Interior spokesperson, highlighting the necessity for firm action.

Additionally, the government plans to revoke the passports of agents facilitating begging abroad.

It has been noted that many beggars travel to countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq under the pretext of pilgrimage or Umrah, where they engage in begging activities.

The Ministry of Interior and Ministry of External Affairs are collaborating to develop a cohesive policy to address this issue comprehensively.

The collection of data on individuals involved in begging abroad marks an initial step towards implementing effective measures.
