Pakistan urges to push key projects and Strategic Partnerships energy sector

At the latest Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting, Pakistan urged China to commence construction on key energy projects, including the Azad Pattan and Kohala hydropower plants and a coal-based project in Gwadar, totaling $4.5 billion and 2,100 MW.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the importance of these projects, particularly the delayed 300 MW Gwadar plant.

Despite proposals to shift to local coal or renewables, the Chinese sponsor, CIHC Pak Power Company Limited, insisted on imported coal, leading to potential exposure to global market risks.

The project’s status remains uncertain, with further tariff and timeline revisions requested.
