Blue hai paani paani – Karachi’s sea glows electric blue due to bioluminescence

-

Breathtaking blue colour sparkling in waves crashing up on shore offer magical spectacle

A rare and spectacular phenomenon — bioluminescence took place in Karachi’s waters last night (Monday) lighting up the beach in blue.

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. Bioluminescent creatures are found throughout marine habitats, from the ocean surface to the deep seafloor .

The stunning blue hue shimmering in the waves as they crashed onto the shore created a mesmerizing sight at a beach in the port city.

Moazzam Khan, the Technical Adviser for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Pakistan, explains that nighttime bioluminescence is a chemical reaction where organisms in the seawater produce light.

Noctiluca scintillans caused the blue sparkle in Karachi’s sea,

Khan told Geo News.

He mentioned that this marine organism is also known as “sea fire” or “sea twinkle,” being even smaller than mustard seeds. Nonetheless, its existence in the sea indicates the sea’s abundance.

The radiant azure glow illuminating the waves in the dark sea appears enchanting at night. However, the organism appears green during the daytime.

These are marine phytoplankton species that inhabit coastal areas in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions.
